COMMERCE FRIEZE

IMG_0173.JPG

The frieze depicts the winged allegorical figure of Commerce with her hands outstretched to welcome all nations. She’s surrounded by other allegorical figures such as Enterprise guided by Genius, Peace and Bearers of Fruits of the Earth, Navigation guided by Urania and others personifying Geography and Education.

Two Alternative Provision schools and a local youth group visited the site during restoration works. The young people enjoyed meeting the stone masons and learning more about the restoration process and heritage careers. They creatively engaged with the frieze through photography, drawing, and carving miniature friezes from cardboard.

Students from CONEL used what they learnt at the site when they participated in our Proud Prospects programme. This programme includes a presentation skills workshop and corporate day experience where students practise pitching a funding bid, being interviewed for a job and presenting to their peers about a historical site. This builds young people’s confidence in a professional environment, improves their communication and interview skills and broadens their knowledge of career pathways.

“People need to know about this stuff, if they don’t then they will just knock it down.”
